A registration checklist for freelancers in Pakistan

A practical checklist for Pakistani freelancers earning from foreign clients: FBR registration, return filing, receiving payments through banking channels and PSEB.

Key points

  • Register with FBR and file an annual income tax return.
  • Receive foreign earnings through formal banking channels and keep the records.
  • Consider PSEB registration and check its current eligibility and benefits.

Freelancing is a major source of income for many people in Pakistan. Getting your registrations in order early makes it easier to receive payments, open accounts and demonstrate your income.

1. Register with FBR

Complete your registration on FBR’s IRIS portal using your CNIC. See what is an NTN or our NTN registration service.

2. Receive income through formal channels

Receive foreign earnings into a Pakistani bank account through formal banking channels and keep the related bank advices or certificates. These records help evidence the nature and source of your income. Tax treatment of IT and IT-enabled export income has specific rules that change through Finance Acts, so confirm the current position for your situation.

3. File your return every year

Filing your income tax return and wealth statement keeps you on the Active Taxpayers List, which can reduce withholding on many transactions.

4. Consider PSEB registration

The Pakistan Software Export Board has offered a registration category for individual freelancers in IT and IT-enabled services. Check current eligibility and what registration means for you — see PSEB registration.

5. Think about structure as you grow

If you start hiring or working with larger clients, a sole proprietorship or a company may suit you better. Read choosing a business structure.

6. Keep organised records

Save platform statements, invoices, contracts and bank records each month. Our record-keeping tips explain a simple routine.
