NTN registration in Pakistan

A National Tax Number (NTN) is your registration with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). We help individuals and businesses register correctly on FBR’s IRIS system so they can file returns and meet their tax obligations.

What NTN registration involves

Registration is completed online through FBR’s IRIS portal. For individuals, FBR uses the Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) number as the registration number. Businesses such as associations of persons (AOPs) and companies receive their own registration linked to the entity.

Registration is the first step: it does not by itself make you an active filer. To appear on FBR’s Active Taxpayers List, you generally need to file your income tax return.

Who typically needs this

  • Individuals who need to file an income tax return for the first time
  • Salaried persons, freelancers and professionals earning taxable income
  • Sole proprietors starting or formalising a business — see sole proprietorship registration
  • Partnership firms and other AOPs, and companies after SECP incorporation
  • Anyone needing an NTN to open business bank accounts, register for sales tax or apply for trade registrations

Documents and information usually required

  • CNIC of the individual (or of partners/directors for an AOP or company)
  • A mobile number registered in the applicant’s own name and an active email address
  • Business details where applicable: business name, nature of business and address
  • Evidence of business premises where applicable (for example, a tenancy agreement or utility bill)
  • For AOPs: partnership deed and registration certificate (if registered); for companies: SECP incorporation documents

The exact list depends on your circumstances. We confirm it on WhatsApp before any submission.

How the process works

  1. Initial consultation

You tell us your situation on WhatsApp — individual, business or entity — and we confirm the registration type.

  2. Document check

We review your documents and details before anything is entered on the portal.

  3. IRIS registration

The application is completed on FBR’s IRIS system, including verification codes sent to your registered mobile number and email.

  4. Confirmation

Once registration is complete you can view your registration on FBR’s online verification service. We explain your next filing obligations.

Important considerations

  • Registration codes are sent to the applicant’s own mobile and email, so you will need access to them during the process.
  • Keep your IRIS login credentials private. We will explain how to manage access securely.
  • Registering creates ongoing obligations such as annual return filing. Ask us about income tax return filing.

Frequently asked questions

Is my CNIC my NTN?

For individuals, FBR uses the CNIC number as the registration number once you are registered on IRIS. Simply having a CNIC does not mean you are registered — registration must be completed on IRIS.

Does registering for NTN make me a filer?

No. Being an “active” taxpayer generally depends on filing your income tax return. Read our guide to the Active Taxpayers List.

Can a business have a separate NTN?

A sole proprietorship is registered under the owner’s individual registration with business details added. Partnerships (AOPs) and companies are separate taxpayers with their own registration.
