Documents to prepare for your income tax return in Pakistan
A practical checklist of the records individuals and small businesses usually need to prepare an income tax return and wealth statement on FBR IRIS.
Key points
- Collect income records, tax-deduction evidence and bank statements for the full tax year.
- Individuals usually file a wealth statement listing assets and liabilities.
- Keep supporting documents even after filing in case FBR asks for them.
Before you start
Pakistan’s tax year normally runs from 1 July to 30 June. Gather records covering the whole year. You will also need your IRIS login; if you are not yet registered, start with NTN registration.
Income records
- Salary: salary certificate from your employer showing pay and tax deducted
- Business or freelance income: invoices, bank receipts, platform statements and a summary of expenses
- Rental income: tenancy agreements and rent received
- Investments: profit on bank deposits, dividends and certificates showing tax deducted
Tax already deducted or paid
Many payments have tax withheld at source. Collect certificates or evidence for tax deducted on, for example, bank transactions, utility and telecom bills, vehicle registration and token tax, and property transactions. These may be adjustable against your final liability depending on the type of tax.
Wealth statement information
Individuals generally file a wealth statement with their return, showing assets and liabilities at the end of the tax year:
- Property — location, date and cost of acquisition
- Vehicles — registration details and cost
- Bank balances, investments and cash
- Loans and other liabilities
- Personal expenses for the year
The wealth statement should reconcile with the previous year’s statement and your declared income.
For businesses
Businesses generally need books of account or financial statements, records of sales and purchases, and, if registered for sales tax, their sales tax returns for consistency.
After filing
Keep your acknowledgement and supporting documents. FBR may issue notices asking for explanations or evidence. Organised records make this much easier — see our year-round record-keeping tips.
